T and I read The Lorax, a 1971 Seuss classic this week. He loved it. He sat through the whole book (ok-so I skipped a few words) and even wanted to read it again! We talked about the story and how the Lorax was sad and how that Once-ler was being selfish. T was happy on colorful pages and sad on the gloomy pages. This is exactly what I think Dr. Seuss wanted.
T then joined my first grade class and our 4th grade book buddies for a trip to the movie theater to see The Lorax in action! My friend Emily had previewed the movie and told me it was suitable for T, with the exception of the "s word." The "s word" in this case rhymes with upid. :) She was right! It was perfect and he LOVED it!
Mommy loved it, too! It was true to the book while adding a few extra plot lines. I love how the characters are Ted and Audrey (Seuss' first name and his the name of his second wife-who was oversaw the project.)
The animation was fantastic and so were the jams.
My firsties loved it, too! They were telling me how it was like the book and how it was different. Their favorite part? In the book, we never see the Once-ler. In the movie, he is given a face. Rather than ruining our own visualizations, it kind of confirms them. As a BIG Seuss fan, I just can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. Partially because I was with T and my class. Partially because after Horton, I needed to believe again!
Another highlight? The Forestry Department of Georgia was at the theater passing out seedlings. We will be planting today-how perfect is that! A karate studio was also there demonstrating how to break boards (ironic-I know!)
Bottom line-read the book. See the movie. You will be glad you did.
yeah! glad it is good - we are taking the kids this afternoon - can't wait!
