Why Do You Teach?

Sunday, March 17, 2013
I was asked this question Friday evening. The question was followed with "because you could do other things ya know."
@somerville
I have been thinking about it ever since. The point is valid. I could be doing other things that make a lot more money. (In fact, I'm pretty sure most jobs make more than teaching.) I could be doing less stressful things that make less money. I could volunteer my time whenever I please. I could sit at home and read and eat all day, too. Wait, I should get back on track here before I talk myself out of teaching! HA!

Why do I teach? 48 hours later, I feel pretty good about my reason. I love it. I even wrote about here. I wrote about what teachers do over the summer here. I will tell anyone who will listen how much I love being a teacher, how valuable teachers are, and how it is the most rewarding job even on the worst day.

I love learning. I love reading. I love math. I love children. I love writing. I love school supplies. I know that last one is not a deal maker, but I really do love all things school supply. Back to school is like a holiday season for me! Again, let me stop before I leave teaching to work at Staples, Target!

Do you teach? Why?

  1. Like you, I am passionate about teaching. I teach because I love children and look for the little light in each of them. So many of my colleagues are stressed out and want to find a way out of teaching. This saddens me. I wish the people with the power to make changes to education would actually take the time to go into a classroom and see the magic that happens there every day. Oh no, I got up on my high horse. You asked!

    1. Ride that high horse! I feel the same way...most days!! It's hard to look beyond the nonsense on somedays, but you right-the reward is in the learning-theirs and ours!

  2. I teach because I love the kids. I love to see faces light up when the answer comes. I, too, love the office supplies though...

  3. Oooo.... office supplies (drools)... is that it?

    No, I teach because I still get to do the creative things I love and light the fires of learning in my students. I teach because I know I make a difference every day. I'll admit, I also like the "beginning" and "end" of it all. Office jobs don't have a distinct start and end to their cycle... it just goes on and on..

    1. Love the start and end comment. I think that is what keeps it fresh. Office job would NEVER work for me either! :)

  4. I teach because I love, love, love kids and I love, love, love books, and I love connecting the two! I also love feeling like I am making a difference in someone's life every single day I go to work! And I love that every day is different and interesting and time always goes by super fast! I teach because it's the best job on Earth!
